Music 839D: Rhythm

Course Description


Course Description:

This course explores the psychology of time as it relates to music. Topics include form, phrasing, meter, rhythm, and accent. Particular attention will be paid to performance timing (rubato) and syncopation. Musical repertoires will include African and Slavic musics in addition to jazz and Western classical music.

Music 839D is offered as a 3 credit-hour course. If you wish to take this course for 5 credit hours, please enroll in Music 679 (Senior Project [call number 14413-0]) or 693 (Individualized Studies [call number 14444-4]), or 893 (Individualized Studies [call number 14629-5]). An additional course assignment will be required for those students wishing to take the course for 5 credit hours.


Pre-Requisites:

The course has no formal pre-requisites. Graduate standing is required.


Meeting Times:

For the Autumn 2005 quarter, class times are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. Classes are held on the Ohio State University Campus in the Cognitive and Systematic Musicology Laboratory (Room 503, Mershon Auditorium).

Course Objectives:

The primary objective of Music 839D is to introduce students to the psychological and musical literatures related to rhythm. We will discuss a number of experimental findings related to the perception and production of timed events, as well as various theories, perspectives, and analytic tools pertaining to rhythm.


Approach:

The course objectives will be pursued primarily through readings, literature reviews, and class discussions. In addition, three guest lectures are anticipated. Students will be able to pursue a topic of specific interest through a literature review and final essay. Participation in class discussions will be important in achieving the course objectives.


Text:

The text for this course is Justin London's Hearing in Time: Psychological Aspects of Musical Meter. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004. In addition, a set of readings will be made available through Ohio State University library reserve system.

Workload:

The workload for Music 839D entails three hours of classroom activities each week, plus approximately four hours of additional reading (roughly 50 pages) per week, plus time for writing.


Method of Evaluation:

The final course grade will be calculated as shown below. A supplementary literature review will be assigned to students pursuing 5 credit-hours.
