Music 839C: Musical Stylistics

Course Description



Course Description:

The theory and analysis of musical style, including psychological, sociological, and analytic perspectives.

This course will explore the phenomenon of style, focusing on the psychology of categories, stylistic features, the dynamics of stylistic change, cross-over, fashion, fads, and social identity.

Music 839C is offered as 3 credit-hour course. If you wish to take this course for 5 credit hours, please enroll in Music 679 (Senior Project [call number 13954-5]) or 693 (Individualized Studies [call number 13984-7]) An additional course assignment will be required for those students wishing to take the course for 5 credit hours.


Pre-Requisites:

The course has no formal pre-requisites. Graduate standing is required.


Meeting Times:

For the Winter 2005 quarter, class times are held at 4:00-5:30 PM on Tuesdays and 4:30-6:00 PM on Thursdays. Classes are held on the Ohio State University Campus in the Cognitive and Systematic Musicology Laboratory (Room 503, Mershon Auditorium).

Course Objectives:

The primary objective of Music 839C is to introduce students to a variety of theories, perspectives and analytic tools pertaining to style.


Approach:

The course objectives are pursued through classroom lectures, readings, student presentations, analytic projects and class discussions.

Workload:

The final course grade will be based on the following. A supplementary assignment will be given to students pursuing 5 credit-hours. The grading scheme for 5 credit-hour students is marked by asterisks (*).
