Characterizing Affect Using Hevner's Adjective Circle - Problems

One problem with Hevner's adjective circle is that there are not equivalent numbers of terms in each of the eight groups. Simply by chance, this reduces the score for groups with fewer terms. In the following revised circle, additional terms have been added so each group has the same number of terms.

Another problem with the adjective circle layout is that listeners are likely to focus on terms within one or two neighboring categories. A better approach to coding affect would be to randomly arrange all of the terms in a single list, and have listeners check those terms that apply. The experimenter can then code each term according to its numerical category, and then tally up the number of terms in each category.
