| 1. Tools that manipulate any representation conforming to the Humdrum Syntax. |
| (Similar to grep, cat, sed, cut ...) |
| 2. Tools that translate or modify pre-defined representations. |
| E.g. pitch -> frequency -> cochlear coordinates -> solfg -> pitch -> semits |
